Introducing New Story Mode Lab

From a question to a photographic form

New Story Mode Lab is a space for developing photographic work in public. Its starting point is a method I call New Story Mode: a way to move from a problem that demands attention to the form through which photography can examine it.

Before making a picture, I ask what account of the subject already exists. Who tells it? What makes it seem natural? Whose experience falls outside it? Research, observation and conversation sharpen the question; photography tests it against places, objects and people. Editing is part of the inquiry, rather than a final act of selection. A sequence may change the meaning of an individual image, and the work may ultimately require a book, an exhibition or another public form.

The Lab will hold essays, field notes and experiments from that process. Some will begin with a photograph, others with a historical source, an encounter or a problem of presentation. They will show how a project finds its form, including the choices that remain open along the way.
