Vodka Bar
A documentary portrait of a Moscow community making its own use of the past.
I first came to this bar through my father, who found a community there among musicians, artists and regulars. After his death, time spent with the people who knew him became a way to understand part of his life. The longer I stayed, the more the photographs turned toward the life they made together.
Concerts give people a reason to gather; performers are rarely the subject. I photograph the audience, its intimacy, humor and eccentricity, and the ways several generations share one room. Rock and punk histories live here alongside Soviet objects and images, reworked by people who inherited them. The bar is neither a museum of the USSR nor a reconstruction of the 1990s. It is a place where memory is used, argued with and passed on in the present.
The building is planned for demolition at the end of 2026. The photographs cannot preserve the room, and a new address would not reproduce the relationships formed in it. This documentary series holds a record of a community while it still has this place to meet.
